Etiquettes of Eid
- Ghusl (taking a bath). It is one of the good manners of Eid to take a bath before going out to the prayer. Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: “Three things are Sunnah on Eid: to walk to the prayer-place, to take a bath, and to eat before going out (on Eid al-Fitr).”
- Eating before going out. On Eid al-Fitr, do not go out to the prayer before eating some dates. Anas ibn Malik reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would not go out in the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates… and he would eat an odd number.” (Al-Bukhari). On Eid al-Adha it is recommended not to eat until after the prayer, and then to eat from the meat of one's sacrifice.
- Takbir on the day of Eid. This is one of the greatest Sunnahs of the day. Al-Daraqutni and others reported that when Ibn 'Umar went out on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, he would make takbir earnestly until he reached the prayer-place, and continue until the imam came.
- Congratulating one another. People may exchange good greetings on Eid in any words, for example: “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum” (May Allah accept our good deeds and yours). Jubayr ibn Nufayr said that at the time of the Prophet ﷺ, when people met on the day of Eid they would say “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minka.” (Ibn Hajar)
- Wearing one's best clothes. Jabir said: “The Prophet ﷺ had a cloak (jubbah) that he would wear on Eid and on Fridays.” Al-Bayhaqi reported that Ibn 'Umar would wear his best clothes on Eid.
- Taking a different route back. Jabir ibn 'Abdullah reported that the Prophet ﷺ would take a different route home from the prayer on the day of Eid. (Al-Bukhari)
